Wigs for Kids believes that a “financial only” donation is just as important as a hair donation. Financial support allows the organization to create their beautiful, expensive wigs at no cost to the families of the children who will be receiving the wigs. These donations cover everything from creating the incredibly well-made wigs to shipping, materials, and other overhead costs.

How to Prep Your Hair for Donation

Wigs for Kids prefers that people who wish to donate hair have at least 14 inches of hair to donate, although they do accepts lengths as short as 12 inches. The organization prefers to work with longer lengths because longer hair allows them more flexibility when creating the wig . You can cut your hair for donation yourself, but if you prefer help, reach out to a professional hair stylist. Use the following steps when prepping your hair for donation.

  • Make sure that your hair is virgin hair, meaning that it hasn’t been colored, permed, or chemically treated in any way.
  • Make sure that your hair is freshly washed, conditioned, and completely dry.
  • Confirm that your hair is at least 12 inches in length (although 14 is preferable). When measuring your hair to make sure it’s the right length, place your hair in a quick ponytail, and place the measuring tape at the beginning of the ponytail. Stop measuring if and where the hair starts to thin out due to split, broken, or thinning ends. Cut off the damaged ends
  • If you have curly hair, pull it taut when measuring to ensure that the hair is the correct length and to get accurate measurements.
  • Section the hair into four or six parts so that you collect more hair than you would if you put the hair into a single ponytail. In order to create four ponytails, make a center part from the front of the head to the back of the head. Then create a part running from the top of one ear to the next. You now have four equal sections.
  • Using rubber bands, tie off each section into ponytails, making sure that each section is pulled taut through the band and secured. Braid each section if you wish.
  • Place additional rubberbands spaced between 2” and 3” apart on each ponytail or braid to help ensure the hair stays firmly in place during shipping.
  • Cut off the hair above bottom rubber band, using sharp shears.Place the ponytails/braids into a ziploc bag.
  • Fill out the correct hair donation form for your specific purposes. There are three types of hair donation form available:Once you submit your form, a unique ID number and barcode will be sent to your email account.
  • Add your hair, your hair donation form, your barcode/ID number and your hair into a sealed package, and mail it to:
