It’s a good thing that hair is now thought of as an ever-changing form of expression because people could get whiplash looking from one celeb to the next to find out about the latest hot hairstyles. Make no doubt about it; there are some stars who rock a look, and you’re like, “Awww, that’s nice, cool look! Thumbs up!” >Insert imaginary gun cock and eye wink here<

Then there are those stars who can walk into a room rocking a half-shaved pink pixie cut with giant dookie braids and suddenly there’s a run on braiding hair and Manic Panic Cotton Candy Pink dye.

Following are three great looks from three of our favorite divas that will put a smile on your face.

Beyonce’s hair is like an entity with its own identity. Bey’s stylist, Fort Greene-based superstar stylist Neal Farinah, decks her out in tressed-up locs that need their own character bios and arcs. Infinite bronze and gold ringlets that get swung around relentlessly, “Lemonade” braids that wrap themselves lovingly around the head before cascading over the shoulders, lioness manes that look like halos as she does her workout-style routines...the list is endless, and they’re ALL fab.

Beyonce’s jumbo braids on the cover of Elle’s January 2020 had people who had literally just gotten their frontal installs done or their hair shaved and dyed a bright, blinding platinum were now trying to figure out how to get and rock the lookl.

The simple, large braids had large parts that gave a really natural-looking hairstyle that was ready for Afro Punk or an ad agency pitch meeting.

How to Get Beyonce’s Jumbo Braids

1. Wash, condition and moisturize/oil your natural hair.
2. Part your hair into sections. These are biggish braids, so keep that in mind when figuring out how big you want your braids to be. A dozen braids seems to be a popular number.
3. Braid the hair a couple of inches of the way down before you add in the braiding hair. You want to create a knotless that looks like you woke up one day and said, “Hmm! I have another week before my next hair appointment, but my hair makes me look crazy! What shall I do?”
4. Braid every parted section
5. When finished, roll up the ends of the hair in curlers, and dip them in boiling water. Let them dry and take the curlers out, fluffing the ends out until you’ve achieved peak bohemian wildness.
6. PROCEED!

Meagan Goode and Her Go-To Faux Locs/Goddess Braids

Sometimes, even stars are inspired by other stars. Actress Meagan Goode constantly switches back and forth with her faux locs. One minute she's rocking a pixie, the next minute she's wearing gorgeous flowing body wave hair, but she always goes back to her signature locs.

A few years back in an interview with Essence magazine, Goode said that when it came to her beloved locs, she was inspired by that famous old-school Lisa Bonet-look that gave life to black boho girls everywhere. She wanted locs that looked natural, a little bit undone but not messy, with curls on the ends that looked like they were growing out of her own scalp. A boho-bohemian look! Hair stylist came up with the loose, tumbling light messy faux loc style that you see today. Here's how to get the look:

How to Get Meagan’s Look

1. Part freshly washed hair, and make individual braids in each section.
2. Take your stretched out extension loc hair, loop it through a crochet needle, and pull in through the base of your braid.
3. Wrap the hair around the brand, pulling it and wrapping it so that it overlaps itself a bit each round. This helps prevent it from unraveling.
4. Do all of your braids until done.
5. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colors!

There are other, faster ways to add faux locs, including via cornrows. Check out tutorials online, and see which methods appeal to you most.

Lizzo’s Purple Reign

Lizzo’s purple hair made her look like a black mermaid. The rich purple against her brown skin was beyond gorgeous. The best way to get this look is to do it with extension hair. That way, t’s a fun look that you can wear whenever you like but that you won’t end up damaging your own hair for. The following method came from YouTuber TheBrilliantBeauty. This is just to give you an idea of the process. Have a licensed stylist do it for you if you’re not experienced.

How to Get Lizzo’s Look

1. You’ll need products like hair bleach, purple dye and Shimmer Lights shampoo and conditioner. Your stylist will have the full list.
2. Get three or four bundles of 1b extension hair and a closure or frontal in the same color.
3. Comb out the har, and pin it at the weft so that the hair stays together while being dyed.
4. Prepare bleach mix according to instructions.
5. Bleach the hair, allowing each bundle to process for about 45 minutes.
6. Rinse the hair, and wash it with Shimmer Lights shampoo to get rid of the brassy tones.
7. Add your dye. She applied colors in a gradient pattern to give the final look more depth.
8. Take your purple dye, and apply it to the hair. She used Argan Oil Pure Purple and Neon Purple, and for the roots she used Clairol Semi-Permanent Color 99 Bluest Black. She ended up correcting her color with Adore Purple Rage temporary color. Nothing was wrong with the Argan color, but it just wasn’t the color she wanted. This is why working with an stylist experienced in color can help.
9. Add the dye, and let it sit for the appropriate time (at least 45 minutes). Rinse, and follow up with a conditioner wash.
10. Allow the bundles and frontal to dry.
11. Bleach the lace on the frontal - there are tons of YouTube videos covering this process. Make it thick enough to dye Once you apply the bleach, you’ll let it sit for about 45 minutes. Rinse, and rinse the lace with Shimmer Lights.
12. Create your wig or install the closure and bundles as you see fit.
13. Flaunt and flex.

You don’t have to follow celebrities to the letter to get your look, but you can gain inspiration from them. Many of them use their hair to show their free side, and if nothing else, they may inspire you to find your true you.
